Bulgarian twin town visit 21-24th March 2024.

22 March is the World Water Day, which was traditionally commemorated by the Bulgarian Rodope fountain and rose garden near the Eötvös Elementary School, together with the Rainbow Kindergarten’s children. The celebrations were made even more special by the twentieth anniversary of the twinning of Kispest and Smolyan. The joint programme started with the reception of the delegation at the Town Hall.

This year's commemoration was attended by the Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to Hungary, Christo Stefanov Polendakov, and the Smolyan delegation: deputy mayor Mariyana Tsekova, office manager Ivan Hadzhihristev, Nadezhda Foteva-Mileva, coordinator of international and application affairs, and office manager Genoveva Nikolova.

Thanks to the twinning relationship that started 20 years ago, the Bulgarian Ambassador has almost "come home" to Kispest, as we welcome him several times a year," said Mayor Péter Gajda in his welcome speech at the Rodope Fountain, which was jointly inaugurated in 2016 and commemorates the relationship between the two nations and the two towns.

This meeting today is more than a celebration of water, it is also a celebration of friendship. Water and air belong to everyone, and the Bulgarian people always bow down to water and wells, because there is nothing more important than bread and water", said Ambassador Polendakov, who thanked Jordan Tütünkov-Hristov, President of the Bulgarian Nationality Municipality of Kispest, for the work he is doing in the district. The Ambassador reminded the children to enjoy the water, respect it and remember to bow their heads.

The children and the Bulgarian delegation had the opportunity to see a one-act puppet show by Attila Simon (Malko Teatro) entitled Nikola by the Sea. From the puppet play, the children were able to learn about the traditions of Bulgarian gardening, the Bulgarian paradise, the most beautiful resort in Bulgaria, Burgas, and the opportunities offered by the Black Sea. At the end of the play, the children from Rainbow Kindergarten sang in Bulgarian and performed a short dance.

At the end of the event, members of the Bulgarian delegation took water from the well and wished Kispest and the Mayor of the city good luck, in the Bulgarian tradition.

On 23 March, they visited the Geological Visitor Centre of the Balás Jenő Bauxite Mining Museum and Geological Park in Gánt, then the Count Fülöp Merán Hunting and Forestry Museum in Csákberény, and finally the Castle of Csókakő and the Zichy Winery.
