Introduction

Tasnad is located in Satu Mare county 26 kilometres from Carei. In 1246 it was mentioned as Tusnad when after Tartar invasion king of IV. Bela pulled out the would be migrate peopple from the authority of voivode, county sheriffs and other judges. The aim was to assign them to the authority of their own judge and bishop. The name of the town changed more times during centuries. For example in 1447 it was Thasnad and in 1753 its name was Taschnad. In 15th century this town was the centre of Ermellek and after it in 1456 it turned into county town. In 1920 after the Treaty of Trianon it became part of the then-Romanian Kingdom. Nowadays Tasnad has 6781 residents and of them 45% are Hungarians.
