Mustafa Kemal Atatürk Memorial Park Friday September 14, 2012


Simultaneously with the wake on name day of Mihály, unveiling of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk Statue will take place in the park, together with naming ceremony of the park, in front of the Match supermarket, at the corner of Fő utca and Üllői út on 29th September. Name of the park was suggested by Dr. Richárd Tarnai (Fidesz), Member of Parliament of Kispest still this spring and the local authority took up the suggestion. Under the resolution the name of the park shall be Mustafa Kemal Atatürk Memorial Park as of 29th September, saluting citizens of Pendik, Turkish sister town of Kispest and the whole Turkish nation.
Eponym of the park Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881-1938) is one of the most significant politicians of the first half of the 20th century who had dominant role in birth of the modern Turkey from the Ottoman Empire.
Mustafa Kemal was born as the son of a customs officer in Saloniki in the Greece of today. He went into the army early, served as general in the army of the Ottoman Empire fighting as the Allies of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in World War I. (1914-1918) and had gained several victories. In the forefront of the national opposition, against the unjust Sèvre-peace treaty signed on 10th August, 1920 closing the war, he made a success of the Turkish war of independence, preserving in this way unity and independence of the country.
Following announcement of the republic in 1923 Mustafa Kemal became the first Prime Minister of Republic of Turkey, President of the Republic, Speaker of the House as well as the first president of the Republican People’s Party. Political, social, legal, educational, cultural and economic reforms created the new Turkey. In recognition of his work the Turkish Great Assembly conferred the name Atatürk “Father of the Turkish” on him in 1934. His person has been enjoying a high reputation since he died in 1938.
